About

Ask me things!

Twenty-something English graduate student in Alaska (ask me about it! I've lived here most of my life, including five years in Barrow, the northernmost community in the US) who seems to be in a holding pattern waiting for life to start--rather, less "waiting" and more "omg so busy I must be out of my miiiiind," repeat ad nauseum. Writer, reader, wannabe novelist, hopeful cynic, traveler (up to 15 countries! *fist pump*), Ravenclaw, Browncoat, Whovian (Ten will always be my Doctor), member of way too many other fandoms, proud geek and gamer girl, etc. (favorites so far include the Mass Effect, Portal, and Fallout series, and Red Dead Redemption). Politically conservative-to-moderate feminist (yes, it's possible). Living with clinical depression since at least 2004. Somewhere around the demisexual end of the asexual spectrum. Possibly a vampire.

You can find me in multiple elsewheres, in varying degrees of regularity: in my writing journal, mostly for fanfic and fanmixes; last.fm; and Twitter (same username for Echo Bazaar, where I misunderstood the character creation for some reason and picked the wrong gender), among others. I'm thestarvelingcat on PSN, which is mostly only relevant if you want to find me in Red Dead Redemption multiplayer, and 100indecisions on Steam, as well as at Playfire.

I also run F Yeah Fireflies and F yeah Raspberries, which are...pretty much what they say on the tin, as well as another one for one of my novels-in-progress, and I co-run the Red Dead Redemption blog the gunslinger's lament.

Are you…flirting with me? Without knowing anything at all about my preferences? Because I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’m playing fem!Shep and everything with the Consort felt like they just programmed it for man!Shep without really even considering anybody else. Bioware’s better about this sort of thing than most, so that’s…a little disappointing.

Are all amazing. I’ve been talking to Pat Weekes (one of the lead writers of ME3) for a solid 25 minutes on Twitter about our love for Vanguards and how to resolve my ME3 demo/Valentines day problem. I’ve gotten prompt responses and solid convos out of graphic designers, writers, programmers, even the voice actors, leading me to believe that Bioware is just an amazing place to work. So thanks Bioware, for being fucking awesome.

*_* I really want to work for Bioware someday. They hire writers! It is a thing I could totally do! They were hiring writers recently, and…I couldn’t apply because I didn’t have a Neverwinter Nights mod to use as an example. :( Which is actually kind of nice because it means the NWN mod Calli and I are attempting to make is ACTUALLY JOB-RELATED.

I like to play other games too obviously, but when they seem to be oblivious to the fact that a girl may be playing it, I get annoyed. Bioware is proof that epic games can include content for pretty much every type of gamer and still be successful and fun for everyone.

YEAH. Even Bioware’s not perfect (and Bethesda is decent…at least since Fallout 3. As I understand it Vampire the Masquerade was pretty bad this way—you could play a female character but it was still very clearly made under the assumption that no, silly, actual girls wouldn’t be playing it), but man, they are so much better than most games it’s not even funny. I mean, it’s really not. I adore Bioware, but the endemic misogyny in gaming makes me ill, when it doesn’t make me ragingly, rant-producingly frustrated.

And loooook what else I finally caved and bought! I meant to wait until the price dropped, but for some reason I’d forgotten that duh, my $25 Gamestop card from Christmas meant I’d only be paying $35, which is…decent, and a lot better than the full price. So that’s what I did. So far I’ve only created one character, a badass lady space smuggler (who is also a cyborg, actually, but she just has some cybernetic parts from what I’ve decided was some kind of accident that should’ve killed her—I’ve given her the relevant scars too) named Mari, but since Bioware’s given us enough character slots for one of each class and each class gets its own storyline, I’m pretty sure I’ll…be making one of each class.

Damn. Talk about dedication to your cosplaying.
