About

Ask me things!

Twenty-something English graduate student in Alaska (ask me about it! I've lived here most of my life, including five years in Barrow, the northernmost community in the US) who seems to be in a holding pattern waiting for life to start--rather, less "waiting" and more "omg so busy I must be out of my miiiiind," repeat ad nauseum. Writer, reader, wannabe novelist, hopeful cynic, traveler (up to 15 countries! *fist pump*), Ravenclaw, Browncoat, Whovian (Ten will always be my Doctor), member of way too many other fandoms, proud geek and gamer girl, etc. (favorites so far include the Mass Effect, Portal, and Fallout series, and Red Dead Redemption). Politically conservative-to-moderate feminist (yes, it's possible). Living with clinical depression since at least 2004. Somewhere around the demisexual end of the asexual spectrum. Possibly a vampire.

You can find me in multiple elsewheres, in varying degrees of regularity: in my writing journal, mostly for fanfic and fanmixes; last.fm; and Twitter (same username for Echo Bazaar, where I misunderstood the character creation for some reason and picked the wrong gender), among others. I'm thestarvelingcat on PSN, which is mostly only relevant if you want to find me in Red Dead Redemption multiplayer, and 100indecisions on Steam, as well as at Playfire.

I also run F Yeah Fireflies and F yeah Raspberries, which are...pretty much what they say on the tin, as well as another one for one of my novels-in-progress, and I co-run the Red Dead Redemption blog the gunslinger's lament.

If any Hufflepuffs wanted this shirt but couldn’t afford it when it was on Teefury, a user on Teetrade has a Women’s Large available, so if you’ve got a shirt you’d like to get rid of, maybe she’d be willing to trade.

So this is the Tonks costume I wore to Deathly Hallows 2 this year and for some reason never got around to posting. Well, I know why, it’s a lot because I wasn’t entirely happy with it—as usual it looked better in my head, and all these bits that said Tonks to me were…less than the sum of their parts? Because I don’t so much look like Tonks as like…a homeless person. Or Sibyl Trelawney. I was planning to do some variant of this for Comic-con since I already had it figured out, although probably pretty different, with a pink bobbed wig and an attempt at an outfit more like how she’s dressed for the battle in OotP, but…others that didn’t include wigs or awesome-but-kind-of-heavy coats were more appealing.

WHERE MY HUFFLEPUFFS AT
Seriously, kids, you’re probably never going to see a cheaper House shirt. If you’re a Hufflepuff and proud of it (and you should be—Hufflepuffs are awesome, despite what some stupid people say), and you can pull off this color, BUY IT. Teefury is definitely one of the better shirt sites, especially since you can be fairly confident the sizing for women’s shirts is true to whatever you’re used to (I have to buy a medium at Woot and usually Threadless, and a medium or large at RIPT, but I still get small at Teefury).

Anywhere you want. Any time you want.

#I like to think that Luna traveled with the Doctor for years. She was his best friend; patient and wise, she always knew what to say or when not to say a word. She didn’t run in fear from the creatures that haunted human nightmares. She saw the beauty where others did not. The Doctor loved her and kept her safe. She did the same for him. They lived like this for so long. She thought she’d be with him forever. Until the Doctor wasn’t fast enough. He lost her on an alien planet, and the psychic monster burned into her thoughts, warping them. The Doctor was heartbroken and had to erase her memories to save her. But she never truly forgot the man from the stars and the beautiful creatures they saw. People would laugh when she spoke of Crumple Horned Snorkacks or Wrackspurts, or any of the other otherworldly beings she had too much faith in. She still watches the stars. She never knew why.

I don’t like the idea of another companion having her memory wiped, but I totally buy that she was the doctor’s companion! Maybe that is why she wasn’t in the early books, she was spending all her time traveling through time and space, only returning long enough to drop off her homework.

I would make a small change and say that it was the psychic monster’s attack itself that scrambled her memory and the Doctor managed to slow down the thought/memory decay but couldn’t fix it, and like…she could remember enough at that point to know she needed to go home for good, because she’d be all right if she stayed in one place but tearing through the space-time continuum in the TARDIS would unravel her thoughts and memories even faster, and the universe was almost worth it, but she couldn’t help the Doctor like that anyway. So she chose to come back home, because no thank you with the Doctor making choices for his female companions again, where her mind stabilized without all her recent memories of traveling through space and time. She still gets glimpses that she knows are true, though, bone-deep where it doesn’t matter what anyone says.
…anyway, that’s a gorgeous graphic.

Only now I realize how much the books stuck to traditional gender roles

Dang Hermes sup baby

I like this.

i always used to like to imagine it being genderswapped when i read them when i was little

i am really attracted to all three of these characters

yes this is good i really like this

The gender roles were subverted a little bit with other characters, though. Ginny was pretty badass.

Discussions about gender roles aside (I’m just glad it’s not Rose Potter, really…), I’m mostly weirded out by how much Harriet looks like me—or rather, she looks a lot like I would if somebody drew me in that style, with the dark hair and glasses and all.
