About

Ask me things!

Twenty-something English graduate student in Alaska (ask me about it! I've lived here most of my life, including five years in Barrow, the northernmost community in the US) who seems to be in a holding pattern waiting for life to start--rather, less "waiting" and more "omg so busy I must be out of my miiiiind," repeat ad nauseum. Writer, reader, wannabe novelist, hopeful cynic, traveler (up to 15 countries! *fist pump*), Ravenclaw, Browncoat, Whovian (Ten will always be my Doctor), member of way too many other fandoms, proud geek and gamer girl, etc. (favorites so far include the Mass Effect, Portal, and Fallout series, and Red Dead Redemption). Politically conservative-to-moderate feminist (yes, it's possible). Living with clinical depression since at least 2004. Somewhere around the demisexual end of the asexual spectrum. Possibly a vampire.

You can find me in multiple elsewheres, in varying degrees of regularity: in my writing journal, mostly for fanfic and fanmixes; last.fm; and Twitter (same username for Echo Bazaar, where I misunderstood the character creation for some reason and picked the wrong gender), among others. I'm thestarvelingcat on PSN, which is mostly only relevant if you want to find me in Red Dead Redemption multiplayer, and 100indecisions on Steam, as well as at Playfire.

I also run F Yeah Fireflies and F yeah Raspberries, which are...pretty much what they say on the tin, as well as another one for one of my novels-in-progress, and I co-run the Red Dead Redemption blog the gunslinger's lament.

Yeah so I had this idea a while ago that Calli should go as a genderswapped Arcade for SDCC, and then I thought well, I’d like to be somebody from Fallout too, and I know genderswapped Boone’s been done at least once but it would be kind of great. Now I’m trying to figure out that outfit—I’ve got pants like he does and I might just do that, but I’d rather use skirts with my genderswapped outfits, partly because it would be cooler and partly because, well, genderswap. The beret’s the main part, I think…the shirt looks pretty basic, and I’ve got sunglasses, so that’s easy enough.

I need your costume advice random tumblr peeps…

niemehr:

So. Assuming I have a mustard yellowish skirt, a brown vest, a burgundy blazer, blue argyle or lace tights, a brown and purple hat, and a 16ft long striped scarf that contains all of the above colours, do I get the burgundy or the brown shoes? I have been stressing about shoe choice for days now(polyvore did not help). I like the burgundy more for the costume, but Four wore brown shoes and I am more likely to wear the brown shoes later than the red and UGH! IT IS LATE AND I ASK THE MAGIC LAMP QUESTIONS!

Can’t reply to this because Tumblr’s being a brat, but I guess…it sounds like there are more pros on the side of the brown shoes? I’m trying to picture which would look better and while I’m inclined to say burgundy, for some reason I think the brown might actually look better with the costume as a whole.

HAHA! FEMME!FOUR LADIES AND GENTS! This is(basically)my Four costume for SDCC. I am not wearing make up, need to iron the skirt rather badly, and will be wearing different shoes, and will have curly hair but this is the essentials. It was so pretty out I decided that I would just go for it and take pictures for y’all. I was going to wear blue argyle tights, but they ended up making me look even shorter. Since Four was the tallest or second tallest doctor and I am 5”3(if I round up) it seemed a bad idea and the purple tights looked better. Now I just need jellybabies….

THIS IS FAB AND YOU ARE FAB

I keep not getting around to posting pictures of my costume from Calli’s dad’s office Christmas party because Tumblr is mean and it pretends to let me upload all of them at once but then it’s like “PSYCH! I only uploaded the second half of the set!” so…here are some of the pictures. I went as, more or less, my Echo Bazaar character (who is…a guy, because when I signed up I didn’t really understand how the site worked and didn’t find it as important to play a lady as I do now, but we’ll just pretend I did it right in the first place).

Unfortunately the dress wasn’t very comfortable, but it looked good, and better yet it’s almost identical to an actual dress from the game. The hat I got around Halloween and it’s…sort of an Exceptional Hat except with spider legs which is appropriate because sorrow-spiders and a lace veil because it’s awesome. Also lots of jewelry. >_< It’s all semi-meaningful though! Like, the keys are for my Myriad Keys item from my Ambition! And I didn’t have the laudanum bottle then so I’ve got a different one, and a pocket watch for my Shepherd of Souls storyline, and a parasol, and spats, and a tiny revolver, and also a poison ring with a skull on because what could be more perfect.

I like the shoes, but the socks are too colourful/patterny. Nine was very bleak/dark/plain, costume-wise.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.

Posted: 3:46 PM

What size shoe do you wear? Cause I am taking a pair of size 7 combat boot to wear in a Rogue costume that you could use for Nine…

8.5, sadly. I might decide in favor of the boots anyway because they’re nice boots (well…nice for reasonably inexpensive Forever 21 boots, but I like them) and they don’t take up that much room, but the other shoes might be more like Nine’s, I’m not sure.

Cosplay question: now that I’m not going as River, I can’t double up costumes with the boots I was planning to wear as Nine, so while they’re great boots, they’d take up a bit more room in my suitcase. Thoughts about these shoes? I can’t actually remember what Nine wears, although obviously with the boots I was ignoring that and going the combat-boot route. Also I’m thinking of these socks—that’s the set they came in, so it would be some combination of the ones shown—which is what I really want opinions on, because is that too much pattern/decoration for Nine even if I’m already emphasizing the military-ish aspects of the costume?

I”m thinking about going as genderbend Arcade to comic con this year, so don’t mind me as I post reference pictures…

Oh right, we’d have to figure out something for…whatever that is on his coat. Probably could find something cheap in the electronics section (such as it is) at Value Village), like…I don’t know, a battery charger or something.

plenilune replied to your photoset: So this is the Tonks costume I wore to Deathly…

YOU ARE MY FAVOURITE :D :D :D :D :D also i want your gloves.

They are pretty great gloves! Unfortunately gloves of any kind drive me nuts after a while and I keep tugging at them, or they help make me really hot, which was definitely a problem in a hallway full of people—like, I was thinking okay, it’s a skirt and a t-shirt, surely I won’t get that hot, but with the wig and the hat and the socks and the gloves and also a crowded hallway, I was…not comfortable. Which is partly why I’m paranoid about getting overheated really easily at SDCC, just aside from the fact that I’m, y’know, Alaskan. Even the bitty local cons I’ve been to, I got way too hot. But…cosplay. I don’t know.

So this is the Tonks costume I wore to Deathly Hallows 2 this year and for some reason never got around to posting. Well, I know why, it’s a lot because I wasn’t entirely happy with it—as usual it looked better in my head, and all these bits that said Tonks to me were…less than the sum of their parts? Because I don’t so much look like Tonks as like…a homeless person. Or Sibyl Trelawney. I was planning to do some variant of this for Comic-con since I already had it figured out, although probably pretty different, with a pink bobbed wig and an attempt at an outfit more like how she’s dressed for the battle in OotP, but…others that didn’t include wigs or awesome-but-kind-of-heavy coats were more appealing.

The concern with One would be probably a wig and old-person makeup, I guess. Easier costume though and more fun personality…we shall see.

I suppose—I tend to think femme!Who costumes have a bit more leeway in terms of a looser interpretation, which could extend to things like that. But also that’s because I’m lazy and I really don’t want to wear a wig or significant makeup, so…I may not be the best person to ask. :p I’ve seen a number of femme!Five costumes, though—he seems to be a popular one—so it probably wouldn’t be terribly difficult, especially if you can stop by a thrift store on a semi-regular basis.

Well, Five is the only one who is blond, and I do like the celery. A very old one might be fun too though…I am not sure.

Ooh yes, you would make an excellent Five. Might also be able to pull off One, since he has white hair and that’s…close enough to blond for genderswap-cosplay purposes…? I don’t know.

Can I get in on this shopping day? Cause I need an excuse to go all the way to Anchorage…

the-night-and-the-storm replied to your post: the-night-and-the-storm replied to your post:…

ok sounds good, although vests are kind of hard for me cause they never fit right, so I wouldn’t mind spending the extra cash. SOunds like Victoria wants to come, we can make it into a shopping/pizza party day!

YES EXCELLENT. I would still like to hit cheap places first because there’s always a chance we’d find something perfect and not have to spend more, but I’m good with wherever. Also pizza. Of course pizza.

You want to have a shopping day some time soon? I’m worried that a lot of this stuff would be kind of expensive, but I guess a lot of it could be used for work clothes

Sure! This is why I try to get my costume pieces from thrift stores if at all possible, and while I didn’t find anything particularly costume-related yesterday at the Dimond Value Village when everything was 50% off, there’s still the other Value Village, two Salvation Army shops (worth a look but less likely), and Plato’s Closet, which is not exactly a thrift store but is still pretty cheap with a decent selection. I like checking places like that first since sometimes it’s easier to find really random stuff, and also because, you know…money. Plus I don’t want to spend a bunch on something and then later find a perfect alternative to it at Value Village. Well, and actually Forever 21 would be a good place to check too, since they’re also pretty cheap.
