About

Ask me things!

Twenty-something English graduate student in Alaska (ask me about it! I've lived here most of my life, including five years in Barrow, the northernmost community in the US) who seems to be in a holding pattern waiting for life to start--rather, less "waiting" and more "omg so busy I must be out of my miiiiind," repeat ad nauseum. Writer, reader, wannabe novelist, hopeful cynic, traveler (up to 15 countries! *fist pump*), Ravenclaw, Browncoat, Whovian (Ten will always be my Doctor), member of way too many other fandoms, proud geek and gamer girl, etc. (favorites so far include the Mass Effect, Portal, and Fallout series, and Red Dead Redemption). Politically conservative-to-moderate feminist (yes, it's possible). Living with clinical depression since at least 2004. Somewhere around the demisexual end of the asexual spectrum. Possibly a vampire.

You can find me in multiple elsewheres, in varying degrees of regularity: in my writing journal, mostly for fanfic and fanmixes; last.fm; and Twitter (same username for Echo Bazaar, where I misunderstood the character creation for some reason and picked the wrong gender), among others. I'm thestarvelingcat on PSN, which is mostly only relevant if you want to find me in Red Dead Redemption multiplayer, and 100indecisions on Steam, as well as at Playfire.

I also run F Yeah Fireflies and F yeah Raspberries, which are...pretty much what they say on the tin, as well as another one for one of my novels-in-progress, and I co-run the Red Dead Redemption blog the gunslinger's lament.

hello, internet! here’s the deal: I live in a dreary little town with few opportunities and an overwhelming cultural air of apathy, and am currently climbing out of years of built-up clinical depression. my goal this summer is to save a great deal of money and finally move out on my own. (terrifying, amirite?) one of the things I am doing to earn this money is record music. (I have an album coming out at some point, featuring songs about various fandoms, subway faeries, and the joys of drinking alone, among other things, which I need a little more funds to be able to record and distribute. more on that later.) (another thing I am doing is running an eBay shop.) I play a few open mics in town and have a block party gig next month, which is pretty exciting, but at the moment I really need financial support, especially until my tax refund gets here. (for one thing, my eBay payments don’t clear for over two weeks after they’re paid. I made a bunch of money on eBay this week and won’t be able to access it until the end of the month.)
so: I could use a little money in my pocket, both right now and over the course of the summer. I don’t like asking for money straight up, though, which is why I prefer to create goods someone might want to purchase. I have written songs about Doctor Who, Dollhouse, Being Human, and Echo Bazaar, an entire album of traditional ballads about vampires, and have covered everything from Amanda Palmer to Bob Dylan to Anastasia to John Donne. I’m also offering myself up for performances — parties, weddings, geeky festivities, you name it — to anyone in the Pittsburgh region willing to pay and negotiate re. transportation. and, hey, I won’t rule out commissions! got a song you want to exist but you’re not a songwriter or musician? need a closing song for your student film? we can talk about it!
(I also make graphics! if you need a website header or a promotional poster or something of the like, I’m here. but I digress.)
anyway. help a geek girl out?
love and gratitude,Jo

Go give her stuff a listen, kids. You won’t be disappointed.

matthew crawley can barely load a gun and branson’s talents include driving old cars and making stink bombs… fucked.

Buffy. I think I’m good.

Supernatural. The Winchesters would be great against zombies, but I’m fucked anyways because I’m a woman.

Criminal Minds. Like I’ve said, the BAU is the best place to be in case of zombie apocalypse.

Jane Eyre. Specifically Rochester. Oh hell. We are going to die six ways from Sunday — but at least we will die polysyllabically.

Echo Bazaar, I guess. That’s…not too bad, all things considered. Or Warehouse 13, if that doesn’t count, which would be…okay. Except none of those had any characters from said fandoms. Okay then, last thing with a fandom character was…John Marston, specifically from Undead Nightmare. I am set.

Additional pictures that wouldn’t post before because they were too big. >_<

27 February 12

I keep not getting around to posting pictures of my costume from Calli’s dad’s office Christmas party because Tumblr is mean and it pretends to let me upload all of them at once but then it’s like “PSYCH! I only uploaded the second half of the set!” so…here are some of the pictures. I went as, more or less, my Echo Bazaar character (who is…a guy, because when I signed up I didn’t really understand how the site worked and didn’t find it as important to play a lady as I do now, but we’ll just pretend I did it right in the first place).

Unfortunately the dress wasn’t very comfortable, but it looked good, and better yet it’s almost identical to an actual dress from the game. The hat I got around Halloween and it’s…sort of an Exceptional Hat except with spider legs which is appropriate because sorrow-spiders and a lace veil because it’s awesome. Also lots of jewelry. >_< It’s all semi-meaningful though! Like, the keys are for my Myriad Keys item from my Ambition! And I didn’t have the laudanum bottle then so I’ve got a different one, and a pocket watch for my Shepherd of Souls storyline, and a parasol, and spats, and a tiny revolver, and also a poison ring with a skull on because what could be more perfect.

25 February 12
And look what else I now have in my possession! The awesome laudanum bottle is from Etsy, and I just added the chain tonight; the glass vial I bought years ago at a ren fair or something and it’s just been sitting on my dresser…until recently when I was inspired to fill it with salt. Tonight I made it into a necklace. It’s not perfect but hey, a homemade ward wouldn’t be, right?

a 6 shot, 19th century “la petite protector” revolver ring.

I can haz?

I’m sure I can find it, but it will be really expensive. Lol
I want one too

Absolutely something a fashionable young socialite in Fallen London would wear, yes?

(via Etsy Transaction - Reproduction vintage laudanum and lead water miniature glass poison bottle charm)
Finally made my first Etsy purchase, because I’ve regretted letting things go before and I’ve wanted this for a while, and dammit, I’m getting a tax refund for the first time in years so I think I’m allowed to buy something frivolous. Just wish I’d had this for either of my Fallen London outfits.

This is a lovely little photo!

Also looks like someone out for a walk in Fallen London, out in some of the trees hardy enough to withstand what some people refer to as “snow”.

renkris asked: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :D May yours be very much not like Cassius' from Julius Caesar!

Well, I did open my poison ring over my own wineglass—only fair since I did it to Calli first—but it was empty, so. :p No, I’m not kidding, I have two coffin-shaped poison rings and I love them, and this one was specifically part of my costume because who wouldn’t have a poison ring in Fallen London? (I mean, I don’t think you can buy one for your character, but poisoning NPCs and other players is very much a thing, so it seems like a device that would fit right in.)

Ozz Angelo line set 43809

Price: 9800 YEN

Colors: Black, ash, white, yellow

Material: polyester 59% nylon 41%

Length (dress lenght) Shoulder 55cm (Shoulder width) Sleeve 37cm (Sleeve length) 65cm
is set jabot collar.

※ This item is purchased as a single blouse.

The white and black one! They both need to be in my closet. I have been looking for items like them so much!

There is a dress version of this as well. I prefer the blouses more.

Day-um. If I had this—dress or blouse, I’m not too picky (and I would take any of the colors but also prefer gray or black)—I would not have to worry about remaking my Fallen London costume at all.
