About

Ask me things!

Twenty-something English graduate student in Alaska (ask me about it! I've lived here most of my life, including five years in Barrow, the northernmost community in the US) who seems to be in a holding pattern waiting for life to start--rather, less "waiting" and more "omg so busy I must be out of my miiiiind," repeat ad nauseum. Writer, reader, wannabe novelist, hopeful cynic, traveler (up to 15 countries! *fist pump*), Ravenclaw, Browncoat, Whovian (Ten will always be my Doctor), member of way too many other fandoms, proud geek and gamer girl, etc. (favorites so far include the Mass Effect, Portal, and Fallout series, and Red Dead Redemption). Politically conservative-to-moderate feminist (yes, it's possible). Living with clinical depression since at least 2004. Somewhere around the demisexual end of the asexual spectrum. Possibly a vampire.

You can find me in multiple elsewheres, in varying degrees of regularity: in my writing journal, mostly for fanfic and fanmixes; last.fm; and Twitter (same username for Echo Bazaar, where I misunderstood the character creation for some reason and picked the wrong gender), among others. I'm thestarvelingcat on PSN, which is mostly only relevant if you want to find me in Red Dead Redemption multiplayer, and 100indecisions on Steam, as well as at Playfire.

I also run F Yeah Fireflies and F yeah Raspberries, which are...pretty much what they say on the tin, as well as another one for one of my novels-in-progress, and I co-run the Red Dead Redemption blog the gunslinger's lament.

FINALLY, POWER ARMOR. That…does not match, because the helmet from the winterized armor was better than the helmet from the Outcast armor. I don’t know.

…what exactly happened here? Why is there somebody with a Vault 108 jumpsuit randomly dead in a random room in the Brotherhood of Steel Outcasts’ HQ?

Apparently that’s Anchorage proper. I suppose I’ll allow it.

Is your ticker all tocked out? Is your trusty timepiece running a bit more wimey than it is timey? Are the wibbles ticking twice as fast as the wobbles? Well whisk your watch down to your neighborhood Clock Doc at Tennants Timepieces (Located in New Vegas!)This is my latest Fallout-inspired Doctor Who design, ‘Tennants Timepieces’, which is available NOW over at www.shirtpunch.com for $10, and only for 24 hours, then it will never be printed anywhere else again (not even RedBubble!) Please spread the word to your Whovian mates, and check it out if you’re a fan of Doctor Who and/or Fallout! Allons-y!

*cries* Guess when I discovered ShirtPunch? Yeah, like two days after this was printed. The site just started, this was one of their first shirts, and I had no idea it existed until two days too late to get this awesome shirt. And since it’s so new, the chances that this shirt will ever show up on Teetrade are…pretty slim. I suppose I can hope ShirtPunch will reprint some of their Day Zero designs or something.

Soooo guess which shirt is actually being reprinted tomorrow? Yeah. And now I’m conflicted because I do still love this design, but I have an actual Fallout shirt now (to be honest I’d be more interested if this one actually said “Located in New Vegas”), and I’m trying not to spend money, and ShirtPunch uses a kind of shirt that’s not as good as most of the other sites, and there’s a missing apostrophe, and I have a billion Doctor Who shirts already…but this is still a really great design.

Atomic Bombing - How To Protect Yourself

…be a cockroach? be a mutant? leave the planet? die?

Yes, of course my reaction t this is to 1) wish this was a skill book in the Fallout games and then 2) wonder if I could mod it myself. Not sure what skill this would add to, but, you know. Something. Survival, maybe, although there’s already one for that in New Vegas.

Yeah. There is totally a mining town right outside Anchorage that looks like this. In October.

What…what is this? That is not Anchorage. That is not—oh, for crying out loud, that’s Anchorage. They’ve made it like…a mining town. An Arctic mining town. With giant pipes aboveground like it’s too frozen to bury them and everything. Well, maybe it’s the middle of winter, I mean we do get weather like this sometimes, I suppose—wait, October? You think this is what Anchorage looks like in October? Spoiler: IT’S NOT. And no, this isn’t nuclear winter, this was before all the bombs fell.
Damn it, Bethesda, people told me but I had high hopes for you anyway. Can you feel me giving you the finger on the astral plane? Because I’m totally flipping you off right now.

Okay, Operation Anchorage, you get cautious props for some accurate place names. I mean, there’s no Chugach Overlook station or whatever, but it’s a reasonably logical place to put one in a war, and yes, Elmendorf is the nearest Air Force base, and yes, Fire Island is a reasonable place to have…whatever, since I’m pretty sure there’s been military testing there already.

Well, I…hm. Okay, I’ll reserve judgment until I see Anchorage proper. There are…kind of areas around here that could maybe look like this? I mean, I’m not holding out much hope since I hear their version of Anchorage doesn’t remotely resemble the real thing, and this desolate Alaska I’m seeing so far has more in common with people’s perception of my state than with reality. Not that there aren’t places like this in Alaska somewhere, because there are, I’m just not sure there are any in the Chugach range. Plus you’re probably not going to see conditions like this unless it’s winter (which…I am honestly not sure), in which case there would be way more snow for this elevation.
tl;dr Picky Alaskan is picky, but…for how detailed and accurate they were with DC, I was hoping for better with my city.

This is actually a normal lady who happens to be standing in deep shadow. It’s not supposed to be creepy. But it so is.
