About

Ask me things!

Twenty-something English graduate student in Alaska (ask me about it! I've lived here most of my life, including five years in Barrow, the northernmost community in the US) who seems to be in a holding pattern waiting for life to start--rather, less "waiting" and more "omg so busy I must be out of my miiiiind," repeat ad nauseum. Writer, reader, wannabe novelist, hopeful cynic, traveler (up to 15 countries! *fist pump*), Ravenclaw, Browncoat, Whovian (Ten will always be my Doctor), member of way too many other fandoms, proud geek and gamer girl, etc. (favorites so far include the Mass Effect, Portal, and Fallout series, and Red Dead Redemption). Politically conservative-to-moderate feminist (yes, it's possible). Living with clinical depression since at least 2004. Somewhere around the demisexual end of the asexual spectrum. Possibly a vampire.

You can find me in multiple elsewheres, in varying degrees of regularity: in my writing journal, mostly for fanfic and fanmixes; last.fm; and Twitter (same username for Echo Bazaar, where I misunderstood the character creation for some reason and picked the wrong gender), among others. I'm thestarvelingcat on PSN, which is mostly only relevant if you want to find me in Red Dead Redemption multiplayer, and 100indecisions on Steam, as well as at Playfire.

I also run F Yeah Fireflies and F yeah Raspberries, which are...pretty much what they say on the tin, as well as another one for one of my novels-in-progress, and I co-run the Red Dead Redemption blog the gunslinger's lament.

hello, internet! here’s the deal: I live in a dreary little town with few opportunities and an overwhelming cultural air of apathy, and am currently climbing out of years of built-up clinical depression. my goal this summer is to save a great deal of money and finally move out on my own. (terrifying, amirite?) one of the things I am doing to earn this money is record music. (I have an album coming out at some point, featuring songs about various fandoms, subway faeries, and the joys of drinking alone, among other things, which I need a little more funds to be able to record and distribute. more on that later.) (another thing I am doing is running an eBay shop.) I play a few open mics in town and have a block party gig next month, which is pretty exciting, but at the moment I really need financial support, especially until my tax refund gets here. (for one thing, my eBay payments don’t clear for over two weeks after they’re paid. I made a bunch of money on eBay this week and won’t be able to access it until the end of the month.)
so: I could use a little money in my pocket, both right now and over the course of the summer. I don’t like asking for money straight up, though, which is why I prefer to create goods someone might want to purchase. I have written songs about Doctor Who, Dollhouse, Being Human, and Echo Bazaar, an entire album of traditional ballads about vampires, and have covered everything from Amanda Palmer to Bob Dylan to Anastasia to John Donne. I’m also offering myself up for performances — parties, weddings, geeky festivities, you name it — to anyone in the Pittsburgh region willing to pay and negotiate re. transportation. and, hey, I won’t rule out commissions! got a song you want to exist but you’re not a songwriter or musician? need a closing song for your student film? we can talk about it!
(I also make graphics! if you need a website header or a promotional poster or something of the like, I’m here. but I digress.)
anyway. help a geek girl out?
love and gratitude,Jo

Go give her stuff a listen, kids. You won’t be disappointed.

HAHA! FEMME!FOUR LADIES AND GENTS! This is(basically)my Four costume for SDCC. I am not wearing make up, need to iron the skirt rather badly, and will be wearing different shoes, and will have curly hair but this is the essentials. It was so pretty out I decided that I would just go for it and take pictures for y’all. I was going to wear blue argyle tights, but they ended up making me look even shorter. Since Four was the tallest or second tallest doctor and I am 5”3(if I round up) it seemed a bad idea and the purple tights looked better. Now I just need jellybabies….

THIS IS FAB AND YOU ARE FAB

anyone who says “just internet friends” is a fucking douche okaymy internet friends have wiped my tears dozens more times than my “real life friends”

Any friendship, on line or not, is still a bond, no? Whether you be a mile away, or a thousand miles away—it’s still a friendship. Something brings us all together; a string of fate, if you will? We’re friends. I love mine. No matter where they are on this planet. And I don’t see the difference than living ten minutes away or eighteen hours away. Friendship is friendship.

A number of reputable psychologists and sociologists seem to agree with the populace that claims internet friendships are just as strong and healthy as the face-to-face ones. Here are just a few quotes obtained from a scholastic library of essays written by said psychologists and sociologists.
“Many friendships have been formed online. A national survey of adolescent Internet users in the United States reported that more than half of the sample conversed with people whom they did not know face-to-face through various online communication channels such as chat rooms and email. Twenty-five percent of the adolescents developed casual online friendships, and 14% of them had developed close online friendships.”
“We propose that those who feel that they can better express their true selveson the Internet than they can in their non-Internet areas of life will be more likelyto form close relationships with those they meet on-line.”
“…not only do UK housewives spend more of their downtime online than anyone else in the whole wide world, but also that – shock, horror – people are increasingly open to turning “online” friends into people they’d deign to call real life friends.”
“However, it may be hard to find others who share one’s interests in one’s local area, and when people get to know one another in the traditional manner, it generally takes time to establish whether they have commonalities and to what extent. But when someone joins a newsgroup devoted to, for example, aging ferrets, he or she already knows that there is a shared base of interest with the others there.”
“Some researchers argue that people can develop close online relationships because the Internet enables individuals to pass through obstacles that may prevent potentially rewarding relationships from developing through face-to-face interaction.”
“Depending on the root of the friendship, on where the conversation started, the benefit is clear – you cut out the tedium of small talk. What could be better? There’s no trying to slowly work out whether you think similarly or have the same kinds of life experience, or whether you really do have enough in common to sustain the friendship – all that is done by the time you meet because you’ve read their comments or their emails or their blog. “
So, tl;dr?
Anyone who would dare talk down on close, internet relationships is ignorant.

#HEY JO~ #his expression in the first cap kind of screams EXISTENTIAL CRISIS to me idk #also I CAN’T DRESS HOW I WANT BECAUSE I HAVE TO ACTUALLY -BUY THINGS- WITH -MONEY- AND IT’S GROSS

kyra why must you do these things whyyyy

(lying on the floor on one’s back with one’s knees in the region of one’s ears is not v. becoming I must say)

Mal, honey, you’re ridiculous — his problem isn’t that he doesn’t have any money — he’s been around for a thousand years, he’s had bank accounts and things in case he needs them for whatever reason, but actually using money is weird and complex and irritating. go to stores! choose things! NONSENSE. also then you have to put the clothes ON instead of them just… happening. WHAT RUBBISH.

now if you will pardon me I have to go make a deflating balloon noise and fall over somewhere

Alllllso he looks really drained in the last cap like he hasn’t been sleeping because HOW EVEN DO YOU DO THAT and WHY DO I NEED SLEEP THIS IS STUPID AND NOW I’M EXHAUSTED AND IT SUCKS AND I DON’T KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH THIS

we are going to take california by storm this summer.

I notice that you chose to screencap a moment when you were smiling alluringly into the camera with your face tilted just so, whilst the rest of us are looking slightly askance. It’s as though you said something oddly outrageous (well, outrageous for us) and we all paused in confusion whilst you cackled.

Except me who is a microphone apparently. Guess my secret is out

I knew you were actually a cyborg!

WHERE MY HUFFLEPUFFS AT
Seriously, kids, you’re probably never going to see a cheaper House shirt. If you’re a Hufflepuff and proud of it (and you should be—Hufflepuffs are awesome, despite what some stupid people say), and you can pull off this color, BUY IT. Teefury is definitely one of the better shirt sites, especially since you can be fairly confident the sizing for women’s shirts is true to whatever you’re used to (I have to buy a medium at Woot and usually Threadless, and a medium or large at RIPT, but I still get small at Teefury).

plenilune:

things my bff and I talk about for three hours on the phone:

  • our cats
  • emergent narratives, personal and regional slang and idioms, our private languages, and
  • the internet as a dialect of its own
  • the internet as an eldritch abomination to which we are giving sentience and which will soon rise up and kill us all
  • how a mutual friend’s cat siphons off life energy and also gives people seizures for the lulz
  • and really someone ought to check the records of the neighbourhood and see if local people keep dying of things that can’t be proven to be anything other than natural causes
  • Englefield House
  • the Hex parasite
  • dress pants and why they are terrible
  • motorbikes
  • the different purposes and implications of graphic violence in media: gritty realism vs. torture porn
  • how our love is a poison that ruins the lives of every fictional character to whom we lose our hearts
  • how German is the sexiest language (in my opinion) (well one of several) (STILL)
  • how we would be bros with Mr Darcy
  • novelty holiday earrings
  • how to acquire holy water, salt, mistletoe, et cetera
  • how men are conditioned to respond to things they are fans of vs. how women are and how women’s reactions are derided and called hysterical when men react in similarly destructive ways only typically to different types of media and strangely one of these is culturally okay if occasionally annoying and another ought to be mocked and disdained
  • mystically travelling glitter
  • logistics of how to Apparate to different locations in our towns without raising the suspicion of Muggles
  • Bob Dylan is a trickster god
  • mattresses

Relevant:

(Also, I realized that Korrok in John Dies at the End is basically what that world developed where we developed the internet, which will make sense to no one except Calli, but I thought it was interesting.)

Other topics of discussion:

  • how memes take on a viral life of their own and almost become their own entities, using people as vectors rather than being actively passed around by people, and how slang and idiom kind of do this too
  • whether hummus or guacamole looks more like cat barf
  • why she needs to watch Natsume Yuujinchou (more livestreaming!) because Natsume is a huge woobie who’s astonished to have friends who like him and is a lot like every other character she’s ever loved
  • …and how she could totally run a Hex livestream and it’s probably both a terrible and fantastic idea
  • whether 4chan is the internet boiled down to its (often horrifying, occasionally brilliant and awesome) essence (I say probably, she says DEAR GOD PLEASE NO)
  • explicit sex in TV/movies and how it tends to make us uncomfortable in general but sometimes it makes sense, you know, and then you have shows like True Blood where it happens ALL THE TIME and it is just WEIRD and it makes NO SENSE and that is just really strange, because if you’re trying to titillate your viewers or whatever then surely the thoughts you want them thinking are not “wait, wtf? Why did that just happen? WHAT IS GOING ON.” AND YET. (No, seriously, what were the scriptwriting meetings like with this stuff? “Let’s have young Sam rob a house and end up seduced by the woman he’s robbing!” “Indeed, good sir, that is not strange at all!”)

HEY AND BY THE WAY IF ANY OF YOU DON’T HAVE THIS AND YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST WHATSOEVER IN VAMPIRES AND/OR FOLKLORE AND ALSO GOOD MUSIC, YOU NEED TO BUY IT. YESTERDAY. Also Jo really really really needs to post the lyrics to these on Bandcamp because they are really awesome reinterpretations of the original ballads and I want to read them. Badly.

#someone should make sarah this dress because she would be such a great yvaine

Yessssss. The first time I really saw Sarah—pictures from the wedding, because I didn’t really properly get to meet her when I was in Dubois—I was like “Wow, she looks really familiar, she’s really reminding me of—oh okay, she’s the spitting image of Yvaine. Like. Wow.” So yes, since then I have felt quite firmly that Sarah should cosplay Yvaine at some point, on account of perfect. (To be fair, your Starbuck was incredibly awesome and perfect too.)
