You know you’re too invested in a game when entering another Vault gives you a rush of honest-to-God nostalgia because…”you” grew up in a Vault. Because your character did at the beginning of the game.

Oooh, yes. Changing our surroundings to make them match our aesthetic tastes, as much as we can do so, is something humans have been doing for ages — I would venture to guess, for as long as humans have been humans.
Exactly—it’s something that fascinates me about humanity in general, that people can make little bits of beauty out of scraps and will do so even when their general situation is pretty bad. Changing our surroundings and telling stories seem to be among the very, very few truly universal human traits. In this case I’m partly pleased because obviously the game’s designers didn’t have to make it this way, and the fact that they did makes it feel so much more like a real place where real people live. /worldbuilding junkie

Wow, this looks eeriely like the DC metro. (Is it? I’m not familiar with Fallout.)
It is! Yeah, Fallout 3 actually takes place in the ruins of DC, so there are tons of landmarks—a major plot point happens in the Jefferson Memorial, for instance, and others in the Washington Monument, various museums (which have slightly different names, I think because the Smithsonian’s copyrighted, or because this is a retro-futuristic alternate history? But it’s pretty obvious what’s what), the National Archives, etc. I can only imagine how much fun it would be if I’d actually lived in the DC area instead of just spending two weeks there, although for all practical purposes I was living there for those two weeks and not just vacationing or something.
